PE and Healthy Schools
Just a reminder that we are a Nut Free School as some of our pupils have severe nut allergies. Please take care not to send in snacks or lunches with nuts in them (including chocolate spread like Nutella). In particular, when sending in birthday treats to share, please avoid tubs of chocolates (please check all labels for nuts) with nuts in them as we will be unable to share them out. Thank you for your co-operation with this.

How we teach PE:
At Ellen Wilkinson we see physical education as an important and valuable area within the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle which is reinforced during their weekly lessons. We strive to support all pupils in developing their skills in various sports. Pupils of all abilities are entered into borough competitions throughout the year, which give them the opportunities to apply the skills and develop a sense of sportsmanship.
We have been awarded the School Games Gold Mark for the fourth year running in recognition of the work we do in Physical Education at Ellen Wilkinson Primary School.
We currently follow PE Passport. PE Passport has a comprehensive directory of detailed plans supported by videos and resources, that provides teachers with the tools to deliver active, fun and challenging lessons in line with the National Curriculum. The PE Passport is child centred and allows pupils' achievement s in and out of school to be recorded and tracked from Nursery right through to Year 6.
Children at EWPS will be delivered a broad, balanced and high quality curriculum, this should lead to more children becoming genuinely physically literate with transferable skills. The emphasis on intra school competition in the PE Passport will also enable children to apply those skills they have been taught and experience those very important skills of winning and losing; alongside developing a sporting attitude.
A minimum of two hours of physical activity is built into the curriculum each week. Pupils experience a range of sporting activities in their PE lessons taught by our own class teachers. Each unit is designed to support pupils in building on previous skills and widening their experience of a range of different sports. In year 4, children attend intensive swimming lessons at Newham Leisure Centre. In addition, all children have the opportunity to attend after school clubs, which currently include:
- basketball | - dodge ball |
- football | - dance |
- multi - sports | - multi - skills |
- gymnastics | - bike club |
Furthermore, children have the opportunity to develop their skills in their preferred sports and allow them to be active during lunchtime with a wide range of activities set up for them.
How we ensure access for all:
As the lessons are active, the learning can be adapted through changing the equipment, process and end goal to ensure all children are included and make progress. By including a range of physical activities, there is a sport for everyone!
How we develop cultural capital:
The key ways we use cultural capital experiences within our provision are :
After school clubs which promote physical and emotional wellbeing |
Cycling proficiency training |
Healthy Eating and lifestyles |
Residential trips |
Intra-school competitions |
Inter-school competitions |
Walk to School Programme |
After school clubs which develop fundamental skills |
How you can support your child:
Promote being active as a family. By allowing your child to try different sports, it will help them find the activity that they most enjoy, help them find areas they excel in and also help challenge stereotypes.
How we know your child is succeeding
PE Passport has the opportunity for teachers to assess your child's assessment against their ability to perform; to work collaboratively and to compete against their peers. Within the app, your child is able to self-assess and reflect on their performance. Class teachers use assessments from each lesson to plan the following lessons and support the children who may need more practise.
